The Message of the Day

How many times have we encountered people who only wanted to take and receive but are not willing to give anything in return? Do we also recognize that, to some extent, these inclinations also exist within ourselves? In what way can we change ourselves for the better? These are some questions to ponder upon as the message of the day revolves around the Temperance card. This tarot card emphasizes the need for an equal give and takes process regardless of the time, place, circumstance, and people involved.

Today, we are reminded to pay our pending loans. In a literal sense, this refers to borrowed money with a corresponding interest rate. A typical precondition for loans is to pay them within the agreed term. On the other hand, a figurative meaning for loans can pertain to feeling indebted in general. When practiced moderately, indebtedness is a good indicator of being fair-minded because a person values reciprocity. Even if you are the kind of person who has trouble reciprocating, it is never too late to start changing your ways.

The Link between Balance and Peace

The very embodiment of equilibrium is shown in the Temperance card. In the center lies a winged angel dressed in a white robe. The angel holds two cups while pouring water from one cup to the other. The scenery reveals the simplicity and beauty of the countryside. Multiple hints show the many facets of balance. First, the angel tries to equally distribute the water from the two cups. Second, the angel is standing with her left foot on the rocks while the other is on the water. Third, a body of water and the grasslands are located on the lower ground while a mountain can be seen further in the landscape. All of these represent equilibrium in multiple forms—emotional, physical, and external factors, respectively.

When balance is disrupted, the condition is akin to a loan. But instead of money and interest rates being the primary subject, imbalances in a situation take a piece of something else—specifically, your peace of mind. Loan, in simpler terms, is debt and borrowing. Tangible things are often associated when it comes to these, but that is not always the case. For instance, you can be indebted to another person because of a previous favor you have requested from them.

Regardless of whether the person expects you to do something for them in return or not, you may still feel a sense of duty to give back. This is mostly because of the nagging feeling within telling us that the only way we can make things even and remove the loan is to repay their kindness in whatever form—cash, in-kind, service, and others. Only then do we feel satisfied and at peace by knowing that our loan is cleared. We strive to have and maintain this kind of mental tranquility throughout our lives—being free of debt.

Clear Out the Balances in Your Loan

Keeping the peace in our lives is a constant series of balancing acts. Before you identify the steps you must take to achieve this, you have to recognize first your priorities. Is lasting tranquility included in your primary concerns? Does fulfilling your current goal give you peace of mind? It is only by being self-aware that you can proceed to adjust your objectives and take concrete actions in materializing your goal.

As indicated in the Temperance card, one way of easing our minds is to pay the remaining balances of our loan, both literally and figuratively speaking. You wouldn’t want to leave your loan with pending balances beyond the given term, right? It can be a source of anxiety for many people. Even worse is that it is one of the causes of fights and separation in a marriage or cohabitation. Just like how a fully paid loan takes a load off the shoulders, knowing that we adequately give back to others gives us a sense of peace and satisfaction.

This is your cue to take loans in moderation and settle them on time. Failure to do so will have corresponding consequences—and this is also part of restoring the balance to a situation. This is the reason banks implement strict rules and requirements before you are permitted to take a loan. It is only fair for bank companies to secure assurance on their part in exchange for benefitting from their services. In the same way, we should also exercise the same fairness to ourselves and others.

Today’s Tip

Moderation being a conscious effort can eventually be tedious and dull, but it protects you from the dangers that come with being excessive. This same applies to loan policies—to safeguard the interest of the banking institution. This balancing act keeps maintains the amicable relationship between the loaner and the loanee.

When it comes to general situations, preserving the balance is possible by consistently observing moderation—this is what The Temperance card is all about. Negotiations regarding the pros and cons leading to compromise are one way of exercising temperance. In our everyday lives, we constantly engage in settling a middle ground. Managing our time, energy, resources, and who we choose to interact with is all part of the game.

Looking back at the Temperance card where the angel is meticulously pouring the water from one cup to the other, consider also where and to what extent you should put your various resources. Make sure that the people in your inner circle are pouring in emotional and social support just as much you are willing to exert for them. While there is no way of measuring equal give and take in a relationship, use your inner wisdom to evaluate whether your priorities are worthy to pursue.

When it comes to internal factors, we also apply the same evaluation on how we respond and decide. Curbing unnecessary desires, practicing delayed gratification, and resisting temptations are some of the areas we can practice to strengthen our will. It takes patience before you can fully implement self-restraint. Once successful, inner peace is within reach. When we attain harmony in our intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships, the degree of serenity is like no other. After all, it is only expected that man’s goal should involve striving for peace.
